The night before my wedding, I ran.

I needed a place to hide. A place to start over. A place to figure out how to move forward with my life.

When my cousin Lena offered me a rent free apartment in Chicago, it seemed like the perfect solution. And it was until the legal tenant, a Marine named Josh, returned early from his deployment overseas.

The little security I had shattered. I had no place left to go, and I couldn’t live with a man I didn’t know. But I had no choice. If he knew how badly I was damaged, he wouldn’t want me around. After all, that’s what he had told me over and over. Nobody would want me.

Maybe sometimes you have to run away to find yourself.

The night of my wedding, I ran, but I hadn’t ran far enough.

Lynn Stevens flunked out of college writing her first novel. Yes, she still has it and no, you can't read it. Surprisingly, she graduated with honors at her third school. A former farm girl turned city slicker turned suburbanite, Lynn lives in the Midwest where she drinks coffee and sips tea when she's out of coffee. She’s the author of Full Count and Game On..

Chapter One

Lena and Ryder’s latest argument greeted me as I climbed the stairs to the second floor apartments. They didn’t fight very often, but with their impending wedding, my cousin and her fiancĂ© didn’t hold back their tempers or opinions. Of course, Lena liked it. She had to tell me how the make-up sex was worth his stubborn attitude. Information I didn’t want or need to know. Wisely, I kept my mouth shut. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have a place to live. Or worse, I’d still be in Des Moines. I shook the thought out of my head. Des Moines was in the past and the people, including my mother, could stay there.
They’d quieted down by the time I reached the top of the steps. The shouting had toned into loud whispers. I smiled. Lena and Ryder were perfect for each other. I put my key in the door, pushing it opened. My heard froze. The door had opened without unlocking it. I couldn’t move. A shadow darted from the living room toward the back bedroom, my room. My legs unfroze. I stepped away slowly, hoping not to make a single sound until I rapped on Lena’s door. My back pressed against the white wood. I knocked again. The door gave way and I fell back into my cousin’s fiancĂ©.
“Val?” Ryder asked.
I pointed toward the open door across the hall. My stomach churned, threatening to clear the gallon of decaf I’d sucked down in the last hour. This wasn’t happening. Chicago was supposed to be my safe haven. Nobody knew I was here. Nobody was supposed to find me. I closed my eyes and prayed it was a robber, not somebody worse. I turned to move into Lena’s apartment, to push Ryder back in and away from the danger, but strong hands squeezed my upper arms. Ryder moved me out of the way like I was a rag doll. Just the mere touch of his fingers made me want to curl up in a ball. I couldn’t keep living like this.
Ryder pushed by me in his bare-chested glory, his sculpted muscles cut with scars from his days as a Marine. I’d never seen a guy with a prosthetic leg move with so much grace. He rushed into my apartment. Well, not mine, not really. It was Ryder’s and his USMC buddy Josh’s place. Since Ryder spent most of his time at Lena’s and Josh was deployed, they’d let me move in until Josh returned in a couple of months. I hoped to be out of their way by then.
Why didn’t he just call 911? Why didn’t I?
I ran after him. Nightmares of Des Moines invaded by mind, but I shoved them back into their compartment. Ryder could get hurt. I’d never forgive myself if that happened. Not that I had ever been able to forgive myself for much of anything. Lena deserved happiness, and I would make sure she had it even if I couldn’t.
It was still dark inside the apartment when a loud “oomph” sounded in the hallway. I flipped on the light, illuminating Ryder on top of the would-be robber. As I stared at the unfamiliar face, all I could think was thank God it wasn’t Sam.
“Jesus, Ryder, I know you missed me, but tackling hugs aren’t necessary,” the robber said.
“Josh?” Ryder sat up, still straddling the guy’s lap.

It would’ve been funny had the circumstances been any different. Or even slightly different. Suddenly I longed for the home invader and not the roommate’s return. I’d have to move. There was no way I could stay here.

Quickly he jumped down from the roof and sped to her. She was standing on the porch, her hand on her hip, and she had a bag!

“The spell I used is not going to work forever, so we need to get going. If this is a trick, I’ll kill you.” There was no smile, but he didn’t smell any fear, either.

“I promise you, the only thing I want to do is protect you.” In his mind, he wished he could say, “Tasting, sucking and feeding from you is what I desire the most.”

Without waiting for her to change her mind, he scooped her into his arms, grabbed the bag and ran, faster than he had ever moved before. He knew Floyd would be at the agreed rendezvous. When he looked down, her eyes were tightly closed. He could see her mouth moving, but no sound was coming out.

He felt nothing but pride. Even though he didn’t want to admit to, or discuss anything about, a blood-mate, secretly it made his chest swell with pride. Once they arrived, he set her down at the door.

“You can go on through; you’ll be safe here,” he told her as he leaned down closer to smell her. He was aware that this would look weird, but he couldn’t help that; his body was so drawn to her that he craved her scent.

“Where are we?” she asked, looking around. He watched her closely, not wanting to alarm her with his intensity.

“It’s safe, and I left a trail for your aunts. Please go inside, it’s for you, baby.” The ‘baby’ part was out of his mouth before he stopped to think. He usually never said sweet things to a woman, but a romantic side was surfacing when he was around Rachel.

Her eyes widened, and then she relaxed. She looked down, and reached out to touch the ring he wore on his left hand. As he watched her gazing at it, he wondered what she was thinking.

“That’s a unique ring,” she said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

He never talked about his father’s ring. It was heavy silver, carved with ancient designs, set with a black onyx stone. Back when he had first become a vampire, and Ida Grace was teaching him about his new life, the first thing she had said was that he must let go of all reminders of his human life before his change. Her explanation had been valid, but he hadn’t cared, so he told her it was a ring he had found on the street. He had never spoken of it again, but now Rachel was admiring the ring.

She turned, opened the door and walked in, and he watched her closely, wanting her to be pleased with the accommodations he had arranged for her. Slowly she walked further in, still not speaking.

“The fridge is stocked with everything; this house is bigger than you would think, with all the bells and whistles.” He stayed close to her, inhaling her intoxicating scent.

“So, no one is going to find me here? Please explain how” When she faced him, it was almost enough to knock him off his feet. His thirst came upon him as never before, and he felt his fangs emerging. He walked to the bar and poured himself a drink.

After downing three full glasses of whiskey, he was able to speak. “This place used to be my home, but just so you can ease your mind, it’s been spelled to be invisible to anyone whose name is not on the list.” He pointed to a list of names on the wall next to the door.

“So you placed my name on the list?”

“Yes, and I’ll add your aunts, but you still haven’t said anything about the place. Do you need anything?”

She finally set her bag on the floor and walked to the bar, pouring herself a stiff shot of tequila. He could tell she was worried. He wanted her to feel safe.

“Are you leaving?” she asked, without meeting his eyes.

“No, I want to stay with you. Unless you want me to leave.”

“No, stay with me. I don’t like being alone.”

She walked over to the sofa and took a seat, and he followed her. He sat as close as possible to her, almost touching.

Ida Grace walked in, smiling.

“Floyd said you found your blood-mate, but I didn’t believe him until now.”

Author: Tara Brown
Genre: RomCom
Publisher: Skyscape
Publication Date: August 14th, 2018

Blurb:
It’s revenge—sweet and hot—in the first book of this sexy and wickedly funny series by international bestselling author Tara Brown.

For the young, rich, and beautiful, summertime in the Hamptons means one thing: Fling Club. Only this time, Cherry Kennedy won’t be selecting a boy for a fleeting romance. Nope, this season, Cherry is out for revenge. Her target? The Fling Club founder and society darling who slept with Cherry’s now-very-ex-boyfriend. And all Cherry needs is the perfect guy for her plan…

Ashley Jardine can’t afford to refuse. He scored almost a full ride to MIT. But that almost still costs a lot. And this is so much money for a little game of revenge and a chance—albeit short—to live the high life. Here, rich girls rule the shore, and everyone has a role to play. Only nothing in the job description warned Ashley that the redhead who’s running the scheme would be so crazy. And cute. Or that he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about her.

Now, everything is going according to plan—until an unexpected attraction raises the stakes. It’s enough to turn the perfect payback into absolute heartbreak.

I believe growing up in a really small town gives a person a little advantage when it comes to the imagination. You need one or you go mad.
Needless to say, mine saved me. After it got me into trouble first, that is. That's the problem with a vivid imagination, all the lies you tell.

I am happily married with two daughters.
I have two giant dogs, two savage cats, and a penchant for a glass of red.
Also, I drag my bread through the sauce. I can't help myself, bread is life.
According to my age, I am meant to be a responsible adult, but it isn't going well at all. I would still head off to Hogwarts tomorrow and I suspect there isn't a single wardrobe I haven't crept into, hoping to find the door to Narnia. And don't even get me started on the King's Road, I get lost.

Fortunately, I am an international bestseller so I have wormed my way into a quirky or eccentric category.

Thank God for that.

After boarding, Jason finds a table and I’m on drink duty, so I head to the bar. It’s pretty busy, it takes a few moments before I get served but there’s no rush so it doesn’t bother me. I’m staring at the bar top in my own world when I hear an angelic voice that I vaguely recognise. “What can I get for you?” My heads snaps up and I’m met with the most amazing hazel eyes and an electric smile. A feeling of dĂ©jĂ  vu washes over me. “Have we met before?” I ask.

“I don’t think so. I’m new to town,” she replies, her voice seeming all the more familiar.

Without thinking, I outstretch my hand, “Hhh...hi!” I stammer like a bumbling fool. “I’m Nate.”

Her head snaps up and her eyes bulge open when she hears my name. With a smile that lights her up face, she replies, “I’m Bailey, Bailey Beckett.”

She reaches across the bar and places her hand in mine. I’m overcome with feelings and emotions that I have never felt before, not while awake anyway. My heart rate accelerates. My breathing becomes labored, and as I stare into her eyes, I know.

She recognizes me.

I recognize her.

We both recognize one another.

Our eyes bore intensely into each other’s soul and an electric current passes between us. Memories of us from my dream vividly flash before my eyes, and I know precisely what she’s feeling, she’s remembering exactly who I am.

We both gasp.

She’s my Bailey.

I’m her Nate.

Katherine Garbera is the USA Today best-selling author of more than 90 books. Writing is the chief focus of her time after her family and the only thing she likes more than working on her own books is reading other authors. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and loves the opportunity to talk about writing with anyone who'll listen.

Garbera started making up stories for her own benefit when she was on a competitive swim team in high school. Though she went to State and usually medaled at swim meets, Katherine says her heart wasn't in swimming but rather in the stories she created as she swam laps at practice.

She worked for The Walt Disney World Company for 15 years and did everything from being a hostess on It's a Small World, to saving swimmers at the Grand Floridian Resort, to touring around VIPs such as Jack Valenti at the Disney-MGM Studios and being a production page on the New Mickey Mouse Club--yes, it might be possible that Britney, Justine and Christina owe her a nod of thanks for keeping all those kids who had to go to the bathroom from interrupting their performances.

To the horror of my parents, I left school at sixteen and held a bewildering variety of jobs: I was a London DJ (in the now-trendy Primrose Hill), a decorator and a singer. After that I became a cook, a photographer and, eventually, a nurse. I waitressed in the south of France, drove an ambulance in Australia, saw lots of beautiful sights but could never settle down. Everywhere I went I felt like a square peg--until one day I started writing again and then everything just fell into place. I felt like Cinderella must have when the glass slipper fit!

Today, I have the best job in the world, writing passionate romances for Harlequin. I like writing stories which are sexy and fast-paced, yet packed full of emotion--stories that readers will identify with, laugh and cry along with.
